“For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo”
Shakespeare Under the Stars’ production of Romeo and Juliet, opens Monday. Don’t miss Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece of love, hate, anger, joy, and revenge. Set in 1810, the Romantic Period, this complete (2 hours) production features a cast of remarkable and talented 12-18 year olds. For 4 weeks they have studied the text, memorized lines, attended professionally instructed workshops in text & scansion, improvisation, and stage combat, assisted in building their own set and sewing their own costumes, and now will conclude their SUS experience with 11 performances.
This year 38 students from all around Texas are participating in the program. Students are mentored by theatre professionals and college interns. The program is led by Artistic Director, Joe Aldridge, Associate Professor of Theatre at University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Guest Acting Coach, Clarence Gilyard, Associate Professor of Theatre and Film at UNLV, conducted a 3-day acting workshop for the students. The play will be directed by Bridget Farias, Artistic Director of the EmilyAnn Theatre. Kerry Bechtel, Associate Professor of Theatre at Southwestern University, designed the costumes and is overseeing the costume shop, and Jamie Lofthouse, MFA Graduate of UNLV designed the lighting. Paul Schimelman, Stage Combat Instructor at Texas State University and fencing coach at the University of Texas is serving as Fight Director, instructing the students in stage combat and choreographing the many fight scenes in the play.
